Dr. Bruce Shephard decided to become an obstetrician because they bring life. He opened his own practice so that he could get to know his patients. And so that, when it was time, he would be the one to deliver their babies. He was constantly on-call. He slept with a walkie-talkie, then a pager, then his cell phone. At least once every week, he was awakened by a baby who wouldn’t wait.
